A day of birding at John Brown Farm

The Adirondack Diversity Initiative and John Brown Lives!, with the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, hosted their second annual Black Birders Week event for the Adirondack region, at a birding hotspot that was once the home and final resting place of the abolitionist John Brown.

Together we built community, deepened our connection to the land, and celebrated Black birders, with guided bird walks, guest speakers and activities for the whole family, plus the historic site and the Timbuctoo exhibit, which highlights African American roots in the Adirondacks.

This event is open to all with love in their hearts, kindness in their actions, and peace in their intentions.

Keynote: Dr. J. Drew Lanham

Award-winning author, conservation ornithologist, MacArthur Fellow and endowed Clemson University faculty member, named one of The Root's 100 Most Influential Black Americans, Dr. Lanham was the event's keynote speaker and guest birder. That evening he joined a community conversation at The Wild Center, which had its own registration.

Schedule

Rain or shine, with a modified schedule in the event of rain.

  1. Early birding walkThe best birding time of the day: a quiet walk around the farm.
  2. Light breakfastMuffins, fruit, coffee, tea and juice.
  3. Keynote: Dr. J. Drew LanhamCelebrating Black Birders Week.
  4. More birding, or explore John Brown FarmIncluding the Timbuctoo exhibit.

Activities for everyone

The site offers birding for all ages, abilities and access needs, from stationary field viewing to more rugged trails, so participants can choose what suits their mobility, comfort and safety. For families: birding books and games, a Birding Scavenger Hunt, and more.

Plan your visit

  • Comfortable walking shoes or boots, and spare socks and shoes in case yours get wet
  • Layers: the weather can be unpredictable
  • Binoculars could be provided on request, on the registration form
  • Hotel Saranac offered a discounted one-night rate; campgrounds nearby include Meadowbrook Public Campground
Design note: The Black Birders Google Site has six pages: home, schedule, plan your visit, speakers, venue and suggested reading. Here they're one page you can scroll, with the facts and the map beside it. Next year's event is made by duplicating this page and changing the date, not by building another site. The status box at the top shows the part that needs no one to remember it: before the date it says Register, after the date it says Tell me about next year.
